Bathing
When bathing a horse it is best to bath the
whole horse. Rinse the whole body, both
sides at once. It is best to place the shampoo
directly on to a hard bristle brush, rather than
a sponge, because the brush brings up dead
hair better. However use a sponge on more
sensitive areas or horses.
Tip... Use a small brush that fits in the palm of the
hand. A handle gives a secure grip. This will allow
you work up a good scrubbing motion.
Tip...Work from the top of the horse to the feet.
This washes dirt down and away. Rinse both sides
at the same time to prevent dirt being washed onto
the clean side. Start at the neck and work down
the body.
Tip...When using a hose and bathing young or
nervous horses start by having someone hold the
horse.Start with the front legs, move up the leg to
the shoulder. Do not move onto the rest of the
body until the horse is quiet about having his legs
hosed.

Once you have washed the whole body and
legs. Use a whitening shampoo on the white
areas. Apply the blue shampoo onto the
brush and scrub into the area. Leave this on
to work in.

Tip...Do not leave for too long as it can stain the
white. For white socks apply to each leg before
rinsing off. This should give the shampoo time to
set before you wash it off. Use the blue shampoo
on white manes and tails. Also it is safe to use
on white face markings.

Warning
When using colour enhance shampoos always
wash of white areas immediately as the colour
will give a tinge to the white, red will give an
orange tinge if left on the white hairs.

Use a shedding blade or sweat scrapper to
removed excess water. A chamois will soak
up the last of the water. This can be used all
over the body. When used on the face and
legs will prevent watermarks. With the chamois
in both hands run it down the legs squeezing
the water into it. This will dry the leg. A dry leg
doesn’t attract dirt as a wet leg does. Wring the
chamois frequently.

Once all the excess water has been removed
you can apply a gloss or polish to the coat.
This will help the coat keep clean by repelling the dirt. Take care as some products may
cause the coat to become slippery. Be aware
of this in the saddle area.

Manes and tails benefit from being conditioned.
Whilst still wet apply the conditioner and work
in to the hair.

Tip...Use a large wide toothed comb to comb
hair. Take care not to snag to hair. Take your time
so that all knots and tangles are combed out.
Tip...Do not use a brush on wet hair as this can
pull the hairs out.

Once the tail is dry plaiting the tail will help
keep it clean and tangle free.
Tip...To keep a long full tail. During the summer
the tail is at risk from damage as the horse swishes
it too keep flies away. If you plait the tail it will help
prevent the tail from breaking. Using a tail bag
gives extra support.

This also helps keep the clean and tangle free.
Frequent brushing also damages the hair.

How to use the products
